A seasonal short story set in the reign of the Emperor Constantine. Tired of the tedious round of drunken debauchery which characterises December, the Emperor’s slave embarks upon a cunning plan to restrict the revelry to one day of celebration, and raise some cash for his chosen charity. A frivolous prose pantomime which suggests some unlikely origins for our festive traditions – a perfect stocking filler.
Constantine Christmas eBook Posy Hill
Constantine's Christmas reads like a cross between Up Pompeii and Lindsay Davis. But, despite its brevity, Constantine's Christmas also boasts some clear thinking and well drawn observations amongst its humour and fast-flowing farce. It is a story to be read, perhaps, just after finishing Colin Thubron's Emperor.Emperor Constantine is whacked after too much partying. As the boss, he has to attend all the December shindigs of every one of the many religions in his empire. Oh, if there might be just one religion and thus only one big hangover... Ken, Constantine's British Celt slave, and Derek, Ken's clairvoyant druid mate, get about the streets of Byzantium on a mission to secure Constantine's wish. Or were they the streets of Constantinople?
A robed monk who is patriarch of all Christians and a bloke called Ali, who runs a betting shop, figure large as Ken enacts his plan with Derek's help.
Posy Hill's story is beautifully written and ingeniously constructed. Its historical theme means that we know the ending before we start but, like all good stories, it's how things happen that matters. And when there's a clairvoyant around, you can't keep the ending secret anyway. As for Ken and Derek, I reckon they have a future.
